THE CARILLON
Thousands of persons have looked up at the gothic tower of Munich's Town Hall and thousands yet to come will listen to the carillon (or as it is known in Munich Glockenspiel) and watch the dancing figures. This has prompted several of the oldest tradesmen of Munich to prepare this small pamphlet as a souvenir.A few seconds after the right hand figure has struck the bell, the left hand figure strikes his, and together, they echo the hour which has been struck by the clocks of the City. Far above the honking of horns, the carillon melody then begins. The construction and range of this carillon are unique. It is made up of 43 bells and has a range of nearly four octaves. After the tune has finished, the spectator has barely time in which to admire the two level open Renaissance balcony, before the figures of the upper level begin to move to the accompanyment of a march. This balcony is constructed entirely of hammered copper. The colored figures represent the tournament which was held at Marienplatz on February 24, 1568 to colebrate the wedding of Duke Wilhelm V and the Duchess Renata of Lorraine. At the second revolution, the knight with the blne and white emblem jousts his opponent from the saddle. The march then runs down and after a short pause, the cooper dance begins in the lower level. The figures dressed in red, move to the rhythm of the cooper dance which is directed by the head and arm movements of Harlequin who stands in the center. In commemoration of the plague (1515 1517), the coopers (barrel or keg makers) perform their traditional dance every seven years at carneval time. They are still proud ot the i:act that they once coaxed the terrified townsfolk from their houses with their dancing. The performance ends with the crowing and wing beating of the gilt cock. The spectator would probably be interested in knowing that the Glockenspiel has a total weight of 7000 kgs.The smallest bell weighs 10 kgs and the largest whch is also engraved with the name of the donator, Konsul K. Rosipal, weighs an impressive 1300 kgs. The works which are completely automatic also inclnde 6 music mechanisms (each with 4 different tunes). These mechanisms are changed on the 1st and 15th of each month. At 9 P. M. when the bustling of the City begins to subside and the noise begins to quiet down, it is worth the trouble for the visitor to Munich to look up at the Town Hall Tower once again.Illuminated by electricity, the night watchman in the leR pillar arch, a lantern in his hand, blows on his horn three times, whereupon the angel of the peace in the right hand pillar arch begins to move and stretch a protecting hand over the Münchener Kindl - the reals symbol of the old City on the Isar and During This The Carillon Melody Begins: "Good Evening - Good Night"
